Charting the course to executive leadership: Anneliese’s journey

With over two decades of comprehensive Human Resource (HR) experience, Anneliese Williamson has navigated the complexities of industries ranging from wholesale electricity and earthquake recovery to health and public transport. She is currently the Manager of People and Culture at the Natural Hazards Commission Toka To Ake, bringing a strategic and operational focus to the P&C advisory function.

Anneliese’s decision to enrol in the Transitioning to C-Suite Programme at Executive and Professional Development (EPD) was inspired by a trusted recommendation. “My people leader suggested the course to me after having completed it last year. It seemed to align perfectly with my development goals, and her endorsement gave me the confidence to take the plunge,” she recalls.

Embarking on this journey, Anneliese sought to gain a contemporary understanding of executive-level contributions in today’s dynamic business environment. Her goal was clear: to deepen insights into the skills, strategies and leadership qualities essential for a C-suite role, while identifying areas for further growth to enhance readiness.

Reflecting on the programme, Anneliese shares, “The standout moments for me were undoubtedly the storytelling and personability of the presenters and guest speakers. Hearing their career journeys firsthand was inspiring, and having the opportunity to ask questions and seek their insights added immense value.” Additionally, she found each session to be thoughtfully curated, offering fresh perspectives and practical takeaways, challenging existing ideas and spurring personal reflection.

The impact of the programme on Anneliese’s personal and professional growth has been profound. “The course has broadened my understanding of what it takes to operate at the executive level. After each session, I reflected and evaluated my leadership style, identifying how I may evolve and implement the learnings in my day-to-day activities. This experience has enhanced my confidence and equipped me with a clearer vision of the skills and mindset required at the C-Suite level.”

Anneliese also noted how the programme’s expert facilitators, diverse cohort of peers, and industry speakers enriched the learning experience. “The diverse group brought a wealth of experiences and perspectives, which offered rich and engaging conversations both in the class and over a cuppa during break times,” she says. She also appreciated the authenticity, knowledge, experience and energy of the facilitators at every session.

For those contemplating the Transitioning to C-Suite programme and exploring lifelong learning opportunities with EPD, Anneliese offers this advice: “I would encourage anyone interested in Transitioning to C-Suite Programme to enrol. Undertaking professional development while juggling a demanding role can be challenging, but the time commitment is manageable and well worth it.”
