Sustainable Business Practices: A course for future-ready leaders
By Dedre van Zyl
In a world where sustainability is at the forefront of business priorities, balancing profit with responsibility is no longer optional. That’s why the University of Auckland’s Executive and Professional Development (EPD) is excited to introduce a groundbreaking two-day course: Sustainable Business Practices: Integrating ESG and SDGs into Corporate Strategy.
This course empowers professionals and senior leaders with the skills and insights to integrate environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into their business strategies.
Navigating the complex world of sustainability
The rise of ESG considerations is reshaping the business landscape. Companies are being asked to achieve financial success and actively contribute to global efforts in sustainability. This course provides participants with practical tools and case studies, showing how to measure and manage ESG performance while embedding SDG principles into their corporate strategies.
Day one will focus on laying the foundations. A key topic is understanding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their relevance in business today. Participants will delve into the origins and significance of the 17 SDGs, exploring case studies of successful SDG integration.
The course also covers the basics of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, equipping attendees with knowledge on key ESG issues, how they impact business operations, and strategies for mitigating these risks.
From understanding to implementation
On day two, participants will move from theory to practice, gaining hands-on experience with strategies for embedding ESG principles into their organisation’s culture. The day will explore tools for stakeholder engagement, identifying material ESG issues, and implementing strategies to drive meaningful change.
The course highlights the exploration of sustainable finance and green bonds—a growing investment area for businesses focused on long-term sustainability. Participants will learn how to use these financial instruments to fund projects with a positive environmental impact.
Measuring impact and leading the future of sustainability
A key aspect of any sustainability strategy is measuring its impact. Participants will engage in sessions focused on carbon emissions measurement, learning techniques to track greenhouse gas emissions and advance their organisation’s journey towards Net Zero or Carbon Neutral goals. Additionally, the course will introduce the principles of the circular economy, teaching participants how to implement strategies that reduce waste and promote resource efficiency.
